Bar X Bar
BAR x BAR - Local Barbershop
The Brief
Capture the everyday atmosphere of Bar x Bar, focusing on the experience of being in the shop; people getting haircuts, conversation, routine, and the overall sense of community.
The brief also included creating a set of natural portraits of the owner and clients following their haircuts, along with a short documentary piece centred on the owner’s story and connection to the space.
The Approach
The focus was to work quietly within the rhythm of the shop, documenting real interactions as they unfolded rather than directing moments. Spending time in the space allowed people to relax around the camera and ensured the imagery felt genuine to the environment.
Portraits were kept simple and honest, reflecting the personality of both the owner and the clients, while the short documentary aimed to communicate the character of the shop through conversation, routine, and place.
The Deliverables
A 3-minute documentary-style film centred on the owner
A gallery of 35+ images for use across social media, branding, and product promotion
Challenges Faced
Working within an active barbershop meant adapting to constant movement, unnatural light, and a steady flow of clients. Maintaining a natural feel while still capturing clear portraits and usable brand imagery required patience and careful timing.
Balancing documentary observation with the practical needs of marketing deliverables was key to ensuring the final work felt both authentic to the space and functional for the business.
